- Бихте ли представили членовете на саунд система?

 Ние сме Игор, Хрвойе и Анте и представяме Balkan`s Hi-Fi soundsystem от Хърватска. Преди Balkan`s Hi-Fi сме били активни и в други проекти, но това е най-доброто което сме правили досега. Имало е и други членове, но по различни причини те не са част от нас сега и всъщност в момента Balkan`s Hi-Fi е съставен от създателите си.

  - Много хора в България не знаят какво значи саунд систем. Бихте ли обяснили в няколко думи? 

 Хехе, добър въпрос. Sound System принципно означава един или няколко души обединени около специално изработени колони и усилватели - така нареченият “soundsystem”. Въпреки това, с популяризирането на реге музиката, особено като говорим за диджейската част – пускането на музика – изразът е придобил друго значение. В наши дни той е синоним за хора или различни крюта, пускащи ямайска музика, без те да притежават собствено озвучаване, но преминава и тези граници.

 Вземете например популярни поп-рок групи като LCD Soundsystem, които са включили израза в името си. Като цяло soundsystem, обаче означава хора събрани от любовта си към реге музиката и обединени около физическа саунд система, тонколони и усилватели.

 - Кои изпълнители са ви повлияли? 

 Продуценти като King Tubby, King Jahmmy, групи като Sound Dimension и Skatelites. С други думи хора продуцирали около 85% от музиката на острова. Говорим за креативната и музикална част, тъй като тези хора са създали огромна част от днешните ридими. Разбира се, не можем да отречем и влиянието на нови и модерни имена като Mungo's Hi-Fi, Dreadsquad, Kris Kemist и т.н.



 - Вие също се изявявате като продуценти чрез собственият ви лейбъл. Разкажете ни за това. 

Всичко започна с компилацията Balkanfarraj vol.1. Чрез нея разбрахме силата на това да можеш да пуснеш собствена продукция на дадено парти. Преди това просто пускахме парчета на други хора, или дъбплейтове върху чужди ридими. След успеха на песента Strah (записана върху Belly ska ридима на Mungo`s Hi-Fi) започнахме да търсим вокалисти, местни или от чуждбина, така че всичко започна оттам. Създадохме два ридима и нещата придобиха ефекта на снежната топка.

В момента миксираме първият си рилийз, който се надяваме да излезе на плоча и дигитално съвсем скоро.

  - От доста време работите с емсита като Brother Culture и много други. Как създадохте тези контакти? 

Игор беше в контакт с немците Illbilly Hitec, които ни поканиха на едно парти в Берлин, в което участваше и Brother Culture, всичко започна оттам. След това просто продължихме да работим с него и това ни доведе още много контакти. Също така се опитваме да промотираме певци и емсита от бивша Югославия. Ослушвайте се за имена като Stinky Ranx и Big Oz в близко бъдеще!

  - В София ще се качите на сцената заедно със Zafayah. Какво знаете за българската сцена и какво можем да очакваме от тази неочкавана колаборация?

 За съжаление прекарването на много време в студиото не ни позволява да следим реге сцената както бихме желали, така че не можем да кажем, че познаваме добре българските изпълнители.
 Колкото до Zafayah, вече имаме общи неща върху наши ридими, които ще можете да чуете на живо за първи път в София!.

  - Как всъщност започна всичко? Как се събрахте, след като част от вас са от Босна и Херцеговина, а другите са от Хърватска?

 Всички се познавахме и бяхме приятели, но не бяхме работили заедно до основаването на Balkan`s Hi-Fi. След дълги години на приятелство и споделяне на общи интереси просто решихме, че трябва да работим заедно.

  - Разкажете ни за местната сцена. Защо според вас хората в Хърватска са повлияни много повече от дъб и roots & culture музиката, отколкото от денсхола?

 Има много причини за това. Най-важната от тях е, че първата реге група в Хърватска всъщност свиреше дъб, говоря за Radikal Dub Kolektiv. Когато основателите на дадена сцена свирят един тип музика, то това повлиява на цялата тази сцена и днес резултатът е такъв.

Първият хърватски саунд систем Bass Culture също пускаше най-вече roots/dub. Много от нас бяха повлияни от тях, когато започваха да се занимават с музика, така че това също подпомогна тази ситуация. Въпреки това денсхол сцената се развива. Има няколко денсхол саунд система и доста от тях се опитват да правят същото което и ние - да създадат микс който би допаднал както на феновете на дъб музиката, така и на тези на хардкор денсхола.

  - Откъде дойде идеята за компилациите Balkanfarraj? Как успяхте я изнесете до фестивали като EXIT и Montreux? Всъщност тези компилации ли бутнаха Balkan`s Hi-Fi напред?

 Най-важната причина е, че по нашите партита виждахме разликата в реакцията на хората, когато пуснем парче на език който те разбират. Голяма част от селекторите не разбират patois (ямайският диалект) перфектно, така че решихме да работим в тази насока. Искахме да дадем на хората нещо, което те разбират и в което могат да се разпознаят. Бихме могли да кажем, че Balkanfarraj ни позволи да пускаме навсякъде в региона, и че привлече вниманието на хората върху нас. Един ден просто получихме и-мейл от букинг агенция която ни каза, че две седмици подред са пускали компилацията на щанда си в Montreux и се изумихме!

 Бяха раздали няколко копия които бяха много добре приети, което пък доведе до EXIT, които издадоха втората част на Balkanfarraj чрез собственият си лейбъл. Това със сигурност доведе до голям шум около името на саунд система, тъй като това е единствената dj компилация накога издавана от EXIT.

  – Вие сте първият източно европейски саунд систем който е свирил в Обединеното Кралство. Как се почуствахте и какво означава това за вас? Може ли да кажем, че това е награда за дълги година работа? 

Не знам дали сме първият източно европейски саунд систем, който е пускал там, но със сигурност сме първите от бивша Югославия (като изключим Hornsman Coyote, но той е певец, а ти питаш за саунд системи). Как се чуствахме ли? Това беше едно невероятно изживяване, което ни отвори очите. Когато живееш където ние живеем, ти следиш всичко случващо се там с един поглед, който всъщност е доста различен от това случващо се на място.

 В Обединеното Кралство живеят ямайци от 50 години, хората знаят какво значи soundsystem, selector, operator и т.н. Там просто са били обградени с реге музика и култура през целия си живот. Това е и единственото място където можеш цяла нощ да пускаш руутс реге на 70bpm, а хората да танцуват и да не се оплакват :)

 Дали възприемаме това като награда за дълги години тежка работа? Разбира се!

  - Вие сте обикаляли доста из Европа, но след партито ви в София ще пътувате чак до Индия. Какво очаквате да видите там и каква ще бъде следващата стъпка след това пътуване?

 Да, ще пътуваме до Индия и сме много възбудени и щастливи от този факт. Нямаме идея какво да очакваме :) И ние, като всички останали, сме гледали клипчета, чували сме истории за лудите партита, за това, че публиката е все още млада и в процес на възпитание, тоест съвсем различна от европейската такава. Така че не очакваме нищо но сме готови да приемем всичко :)

Balkan`s Hi-Fi : reggae from Croatia to India

- Could you introduce the members of the sound system?

It's Igor, Hrvoje and Ante representing Balkan's Hi Fi soundsystem out of Croatia. We've been active in some other projects prior to Balkan's HiFi, but basically, Balkan's Hi Fi is the best thing we have done so far. There have been other members in the past, but crew got narrowed down due to various reasons to original members who started the whole idea in the beginning.

- Lot of people in Bulgaria don`t know what a sound system mean. Can you explain it to them in a few words?

Heh, good question. Sound System is a term usually related to a crew gathered around specially made physical speakers, so called "soundsystem". However, with increase of popularity of reggae genre, especially when we speak about DJing part of reggae music, the sole term kind off expanded itself, so today it's a synonym for a reggae DJ-selecting crews, but it passes that as well, cause we see popular rock-pop bands taking word "soundsystem" in their names (eg. LCD Soundsystem, which has no connection to reggae at all). But originally, the term represents crew gathered around physical sound or reggae DJ crew without a sound.

- Which are your main influences?

Producers like King Tubby / Jammy, bands like Sound Dimension or Skatelites, in other words, people who produced at least 85% of all music ever one on Island (basically, we are speaking about creativity and musicianship, cause this people made most of the riddims known in today's reggae). But we cannot ignore the influence of modern producers like Mungo's, Dreadsquad, Kris Kemist, list is simply too big :)

- You`ve also been producing tunes on your own label. Tell us more about it.

Well it all started with vol.1 of Balkanfarraj. That's where we first understood the power of having your own tune to play in dance, before that we were just playing other people productions or our dubplates on other people's riddims.

After initial success of "Strah" (which was done on Mungo's "Belly Ska" riddim), we started to look for vocalists all around, both domestic and foreign, so everything just started from there...
We did a couple of our riddims, and the thing started to snowball. Currently we are mastering our 1st release which will hopefully be out on vinyl and digital download very soon.

- You`ve been collaboration with mc`s such as Brother Culture and many others, how did this connection happen?

 Igor was in contact with guys called Illbilly Hitec, they gave us an invitation to come and play in Berlin and Leipzig with Brother Culture, and everything went down from there. We just continued working with Brother Culture, what eventually brought us a lot of other connections. We are also trying to push more ex-yu MC's and signers. You surely need to watch out for Stinky Ranx and Big Oz in the future.

- You`ll go on stage alongside Zafayah. What do you know about the bulgarian scene and what can we expect fromt his unexpected collaboration?

Unfortunetly, spending a lot of time in studio doesn't allow us to follow other reggae scene as we would like to so, we must say that we are not very familiar with bulgarian scene. With Zafayah we already did some collaboration on our riddims which we will represent on 19th. for the first time live on stage! So yeah, really expect the unexpected.

- How did it all start for you? How did you get together, since part of you are from Bosnia, and the other from Croatia?

We were all friends from the start but we didn't collaborate until Balkan's Hi Fi was founded. After years of friendship and looking for the same sound we decided that we have to take actions together. Igor through his travels around the ex-Yugoslavia region met some amazing people who joined Balkan's Hi Fi in start. That's how we got to know each other and how we got together as some indeed outernational soundsystem. However, physical distance between took it's part here so we are now back to original founding members.

- Tell me more about the local scene, festivals, etc? How come that people in Croatia are quite a lot more into dub and roots & culture rather than into dancehall music for example?
There are many reasons. Main one is that first serious croatian "reggae" band was indeed a dub band, called Radikal Dub Kolektiv, and when you have forerunners of the scene preaching roots and dub, instead of dancehall, you get a scene as it is today.

Also, Croatia's first soundsystem ever, Bass Culture, are also heavy into roots/dub, and lots of us listened and looked up to them as we were starting, so they also contributed a lot to this situation. But dancehall scene is coming up as well, there are couple of dancehall sounds, and more of them like us who try to mix the whole variety of reggae genres into one whole, which is sound for which we believe that can suit a straight dubhead, as well as hardcore dancehall yardie.


- Where did the idea of Balkanfarraj compilations come from, and how did you manage to get it as far as EXIT and Montreux festivals? Is this what actually made your name on the local scene?

Main one being with the fact that we could see the difference when you play a song on Croatian language in the dance, compared with some Jamaican tune. People can understand it directly, this domestic tune, and they can relate to it, since they know the subject, and foremost, they know what the person is speaking about. Not even all of selectors understand patois (jamican dialect) perfectly, so we kinda worked in that direction, to give people who are interested in reggae something what they can understand and relate to.

You could say that Balkanfarraj made us known alongside with playing gigs around the region, which is what also got people's attention to us. Thing with Montreux is that just got an email from one booking agency that they have been playing it there for 2 weeks on Montreux Jazz Festival on their stand, and we were just WOW. Some copies were distributed there, a good reaction received as well, and this snowballed to the EXIT festival.Releasing the vol.2 for EXIT.Label definitely gave us proper spotlight with fact that it's one and only DJ compilation ever released on EXIT.Label, speaks for itself really.

- You`re the first eastern European sound system to have played the UK. How does it feel like and what does it mean to you? Is it like a reward of years of hard labour?
Don't know if we are first eastern Europe soundsystem to play in UK. Definitely first ones from ex-yu region (if we exclude Hornsman Coyote cause he's a singer, and you're asking about sounds), but we are not sure about the whole east Europe.

How does it feel? Well, it was an eye-opening experience for sure. When you are living here were we do and you're a reggae fan, you watch everything that's going on in the UK from a far, then you create a certain impression how things are there, and once you finally come to UK and see those dances, you become way more realistic of how things truly are there. Citizens of UK are living with Jamaicans for last 50+ years, and they know what a soundsystem is, what a selector is, what a operator is and what a soundbox... They simply are surrounded with reggae music and culture whole their lives. UK is only place where you can see people dancing to 70bpm roots reggae whole night and don't complain :)

Is it a reward for years of hard labor? Definitely!

- Not only you`ve been playing a lot around Europe, but after Sofia you`ll go as far as India. What do you expect to see there and what`s the next step after that?

Yes, India. We are very hyped and happy to go and play there. What we expect? Frankly speaking, we have no clue hehehe :) We, as others, saw the videos done by reggae crews there, we heard the stories about the dances there, that they are wild, that crowd is still young and still learning, so definitely not your regular European crowd. So we are not expecting anything, but we're ready for whatever we bump into there :)
